In order for effective learning to take place, the Agenda/Topic of the day needs to be clearly posted along with the learning objective. When possible, I will greet students who are quietly entering my classroom with positive, polite and welcoming comments – addressing students by name. Since there is not the need to take roll and most of our lessons begin with presentations, examples of excellence and instructions, students are encouraged to wait patiently before they begin activities in the art room. Sometimes, the studio work involved with a lesson takes multiple weeks, in which case their work will either be ready at their assigned seat to continue or quickly passed back with the help of other students or their classroom teacher. Some auxiliary handouts, drawing exercises or reading material is available as self-starters if students finish their projects ahead of other students.
Lessons are introduced by using Google Docs/Power-point presentations. The Agenda and learning objectives are posted at the beginning of each lesson within the presentations. Lecture information is highlighted along with any new vocabulary specific to the lesson. As the teacher, I will advance the slides by using a remote while walking between the tables in an effort to monitor engagement and student attention. I try to keep the delivery of information and instructions to a maximum of 15 minutes before we start our studio work. Before we begin, I also post an "I Can" statement within the presentation along with an example of finished work so students can understand what is expected of them.
